La esporotricosis es causada por el hongo dimórfico Sporothrix schenckii de la familia Ophiostomataceae que crece en forma de levadura en los tejidos o en cultivo a 37º C, o como un moho filamentoso en cultivos a temperatura ambiente o en el ambiente.
