Abstract

Composition as an academic field is still in its infancy. While college students in the United States are now regularly required to take composition classes, it wasn't until the mid-ninteenth century that such classes began to be offered as a standard part of the college curriculum. Theorists have borrowed concepts and ideas from other disciplines as they have developed the discipline of composition, resulting in a virtual explosion of conceptualization and research in composition in the last twenty-five years.
