Abstract

Hardware-Assisted garbage collection for Icon guarantees real-time response and consistent performance. This report describes the changes made to Icon's run-time system in porting Icon to the hardware-assisted garbage collection environment and compares the performance of fifty Icon programs using the traditional and hardware-assisted garbage collection implementations. Throughput for the hardware-assisted system ranges from 45% slower to 28% faster than the traditional system. Suggestions for improving the performance of the hardware-assisted implementation are also discussed.
