Diabetes mellitus may be defined as a metabolic disturbance in which there exists either an absolute or relative deficiency of insulin. The incidence approaches one diabetic per one thousand dogs. The disease predominates in females and is more frequently seen in small breeds, notably the terriers. Oviohysterectomy does not affect the incidence of the disease. The majority of the patients fall within the range of seven to ten years of age.
Since last January (1972) we have been correcting left abomasal displacements (LDA) by the closed suturing technique. This technique was explained to me by Dr. Richard Boese of Springville, New York. Many surgical techniques for the correction of LDA have been described in the past and all seem to have a high degree of success when used by people familiar with the procedure.
A one and a half year old mixed breed female was referred to the clinic with a chronic cough. The referring veterinarian had removed a weed seed from the tonsilar crypt following which the animal showed transient improvement. Antibiotics and digitalis were administered with no evident response. The animal had never been vaccinated.
