Abstract

Agricultural chemicals pose a threat to groundwater largely because nitrate-nitrogen (NO3 N) and pesticides are leached (removed) by downward-percolating surface water that infiltrates soil. Assessing conventional agriculture' s true impact on groundwater quality depends on a better understanding of how and why these chemicals move through and below the crop root zone.
