Abstract

The Iowa State College, like most land grant institutions, has three main fields of activity. These are teaching, research and extension. Research means careful and diligent search, or studious inquiry, with the aim of discovering new facts and interpreting them correctly. The new knowledge so acquired, added to past knowledge, forms the factual foundation for the teaching and extension programs. Research is a continuing process in that new facts have to be integrated with the old, and previously accepted conclusions or "laws" revised in light of them.
