In a telecommuting age of ubiquitous screens and worldwide webs, when encouragement to connect, to reach out and touch someone, seems never-ending, why republish a twenty-five-year-old inquiry into the nature of "the touristic experience"? This question- obvious to anyone who might already have read appreciatively, as I did a decade ago, Dean MacCannell's The Tourist-is not readily answered by rereading the book today.
