The investigation upon the amount of moisture present in the soil on which were grown various crops, was commenced in 1895, and the results of that year were published in Bulletin No. 32 of this Station. The work upon this subject was continued during 1896, and with a much wider scope than in 1895. In addition to the effect produced upon the moisture present in the soil by certain crops, attention was given to the influence of spring plowing, fall plowing and fall plowing with sub-soiling upon the amount of moisture in connection with growing crops. The soil upon which the experiments were made was of as uniform a nature as possible in order to reduce the influence of the difference in the mechanical condition to a minimum.
