This special issue focuses on the development of sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystems to support innovation and the creation of new businesses where sustainability is the nexus for entrepreneurial activities. In this editorial, we outline and integrate the distinct contributions of the six empirical studies included in the special issue. In addition, we comment on current state of our academic understanding of entrepreneurship ecosystems and offer some specific guidance for future empirical research. Given the continued strong interest in creating entrepreneurship ecosystems around the world, we consider related research crucial not only for advancing academic knowledge, but also for providing better guidance for policy makers and other stakeholders actively engaged in the creation and management of such systems.
