University Honors Program

The Honors project is potentially the most valuable component of an Honors education. Typically Honors students choose to do their projects in their area of study, but some will pick a topic of interest unrelated to their major.

The Honors Program requires that the project be presented at a poster presentation event. Poster presentations are held each semester. Most students present during their senior year, but may do so earlier if their honors project has been completed.

This site presents project descriptions and selected posters for Honors projects completed since the Fall 2015 semester.

Abstract

For my honors project, I created and maintained an internet blog series that strove to heighten awareness of current lifestyle choices we make in the States and how acting on these choices lead to global consequences. This was done during my time studying and interning abroad in Lima, Peru. Every so often, I shifted my focus to include excerpts on what I learned from the Peruvian lifestyle and how those lessons were applicable in everyday life to create a better-rounded site. As I blogged throughout the semester, I realized there are many privileges we take for granted and international issues we overlook because they are not considered pressing in our area of the States. This can cloud our judgment of how prevalent these matters are worldwide. I also discovered that stagnation with these issues within third world countries such as Peru can be attributed to many factors, such as lack of infrastructure, knowledge and/or money among others. Peru has multiple programs of advocacy, but they have no way to advance their measures. The outcomes for my project have led me to learn that these international issues and more are everyone’s business, and every little bit done leads to a better world for all.
