Abstract
The key to sweet corn pest management is the awareness of the interaction of plant phenology and insect activity, which produces "windows of vulnerability." In most areas of the Midwest, the planting period for sweet corn extends over several months, as does harvest. Sweet corn fields are surrounded by a much larger acreage of field corn that is planted during a short period in the spring and harvested in the fall, usually after sweet corn has been harvested. Insects may leave field corn and select sweet corn as a more attractive host as field corn dries down.
