Abstract

This dissertation describes how a traditional organic chemistry laboratory was reformed into a guided inquiry laboratory. Data presented illustrate the lack of correlation between the traditional laboratory and the corresponding lecture. After reforming the laboratory, student scores on lecture exams increased, specifically on exam questions directly related to concepts introduced in the laboratory. This dissertation covers work completed over the course of four years and includes the new laboratory manual, instructor notes for each new experiment, as well as a laboratory practical exam.
