Abstract

This case study involves one elementary teacher who works with special needs students who use assistive technology on a daily basis in the classroom. The purpose of the study is to identify the benefits and barriers encountered in classroom settings by a teacher who must use assistive technology with a student on a daily basis. Assistive technology is defined as "any piece of equipment that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities" (Wehmyer, 1999, p. 48). Specifically, this case study is designed to discover or understand the where the classroom teacher works with a special needs student who uses what is referred to as a 'High Technology' device according to Sweeny (2003). Examples of 'High Technology' devices include alternative keyboards, individualized computer devices and related software. This elementary teacher was selected because she works with a student in her classroom that uses a 'High Technology' device for daily learning tasks. The teacher was interviewed multiple times and classroom observations of the student using the device in the classroom were conducted.
