Abstract

Diabetes mellitus may be defined as a metabolic disturbance in which there exists either an absolute or relative deficiency of insulin. The incidence approaches one diabetic per one thousand dogs. The disease predominates in females and is more frequently seen in small breeds, notably the terriers. Oviohysterectomy does not affect the incidence of the disease. The majority of the patients fall within the range of seven to ten years of age.
