Abstract

Soybean variety development pipelines utilize winter nurseries to increase the number of generations grown per year in order to reduce the amount of time needed to develop commercial varieties. These winter nurseries are often in environments that the varieties are not suited for, and can mature later than needed to meet testing deadlines for the next testing season. Desiccants have been used to speed up the pace at which soybean lines mature, but have also caused reduced seed germination and yield. The general objectives are to review previous studies on desiccants to determine:

1) Application timing based on effect on seed quality

2) Chemical selection between glyphosate, glufosinate, and paraquat

3) Preferred timing and chemical application combination with respect to effects on seed quality.
