Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease is a relatively common neurodegenerative disorder, and the current treatment protocol revolves around a pharmacological approach. There are several potential beneficial effects of exercise on the brain (e.g. synaptogenesis, angiogenesis, neurogenesis), and exercise could be used as an additional treatment to the current pharmacological treatments to create a more comprehensive treatment approach for AD patients. Several studies have investigated the cognitive and physical effects of different exercise protocols on AD patients, and while the effects of exercise on cognition are unclear, exercise has improved the functionality of AD patients in the mild-moderate stages of the disease. Future research should focus on the development of a standardized exercise protocol that can be adjusted to address the individual needs of AD patients.
