A creative component project was completed to meet the requirement for the Masters of Education (emphasis in Educational Technology) in the School of Education at Iowa State University. The creative component project, a research and practice poster (see Figure 1, Figure 2), was aligned to the following program standards: 1) Visionary Learner, Planner and Designer, 2) Equity and Citizenship Advocate, 3) Researcher and Analyst, and 4) Empowering Leader.
The first standard, Visionary Learner, Planner and Designer, highlights using and exploring promising practices that leverage technology to improve student learning, focusing on designing authentic learning activities to maximize learning. The artifacts I chose to illustrate my knowledge of this standard was the final report and presentation entitled Confronting Ableism in the Classroom (an assignment from EDUC 503 - Designing Effective Learning Environments) and a slide depicting useful tools that I have implemented in my 4th and 5th grade classrooms. The innovative tools I used for designing and implementing learning were Seesaw, Flipgrid, and Bookcreator.
Standard two, Equity and Citizenship Advocate, promotes my ability to use and apply equity, inclusion, and digital citizenship practices with the goal of positively contributing to the digital world. The artifacts I chose to illustrate my knowledge of this standard were two assignments from EDUC 577 - Historical Perspectives on Technology Equity: Implications for Policy and Practice. The midterm essay featuring my reflections on mapping social identities, intersectionality, and identification of societal views and my Scholarly Inquiry on Digital Culturally Responsive Teaching. I also included a snapshot of my work promoting STEM education for all students in my school.
The third standard, Researcher and Analyst, illustrates my ability to understand and use data to improve my instruction and practice. It is an opportunity to share lessons learned, best practices and challenge that impact learning with technology. The artifacts I chose to illustrate my knowledge of this standard were my final paper from my action research project, Short Answer Assessment in Science: A Fourth Grade Case Study. I also included an interactive book reflecting my knowledge of ethnographic research and an infograph on digital research in my interest area.
Finally, standard 4, Empowering Leader, highlights how I have sought out opportunities for leadership to support student success and improve teaching and learning. The artifacts I chose to illustrate my knowledge of this standard was a video testimonial from my principal, a grant proposal for technology implementation, and a presentation that showcased my ability to lead colleagues during the phase of remote learning in 2020.
In conclusion, this Creative Component summarized the most impactful artifacts that represent my learning during my masters program at Iowa State University. My professional growth and application of these artifacts were fundamental to positively impacting the lives of the students I worked with.
