Abstract

Game controllers, beer bottles, headphones, cell phones, lighters, and skate bearings are objects that signify negotiations and constructions of my identity through interaction with others. From my likes and interests to my vices and distractions, each object reflects a different aspect of me. In my thesis titled, Sediments of Identity, I utilize the previously mentioned objects to reflect on the sentimental value I have created throughout time, space, and experience. Using material culture analysis, I examine how I assigned meaning to these objects to reflect my identity's different aspects. The objects, integrated into handcrafted mechanisms, move in response to the audiences’ presence. The viewer's presence becomes essential in the subsequent viewings, resulting in multiple and varying interpretations.
