Swine breeding experiments at the Iowa Station have had two major objectives.First, we wanted to know whether we could improve our present pure breeds by inbreeding. Many of the early breeders did some inbreeding and outcrossing with the strain they had. The successful ones among these became the foundation stocks of our present day pure breeds. We wondered-have all of the possibilities of inbreeding been used up in the fountain periods?
