New product called poloxalene has been tested at Iowa State and Kansas State Universities and is the most effective preventive of legume bloat yet developed. It's now being marketed commercially.

Economic activity in the U.S. has continued its strong expansion so far this year. Employment and income gains brought an 8 1/2 percent boost in consumer spending during the first quarter. Total business investment was up 8 percent, including a 13 percent rise in outlays for facilities and equipment. Government spending showed a 9 percent gain, with most of the increase for military needs.
