Soil moisture reserve up from last year. Potential for 1966 yields high. However, yield still dependent on good rains during growing season.
Here are cost figures for various farm operations based on cost accounting records of Iowa State University. Hourly charges for most tractors and implements up 5 to 15 percent from last year.
Control and eradication programs show excellent progress in 1965. More progress in sight for 1966 as Iowa becomes modified-certified brucellosis free, meat inspection is enacted, and other programs continue.
With the year completed and the deadline for income tax approaching, Iowa families are sizing up 1965. Families who "went under" a couple times ( or at least didn't make the financial progress they desired) are looking for at 1966 and asking, "What will we do differently this year?"
Another good year ahead seen as domestic and export demand should continue strong. Larger soybean crop to soften bean prices. Hog prices and returns should continue favorable during most of 1966.
