Cattle and calves on U. S. farms and ranches Jan. 1, 1967, numbered 108.5 million head. This was a little below the revised 1966 estimate of 108.9 million and marked the second year of small decline from the Jan. 1, 1965, peak. All of the decrease in the January 1 count was in dairy cattle - down 5 percent from a year earlier. The number of beef cattle showed a 1 percent increase during 1966.
