High livestock prices seem in the cards for this summer and fall; Meat output is down from a year ago. And as long as business stays good, demand for meat will be strong.
Contour farming is good business- if your land is sloping and you're troubled with soil and water run-off. Farners by and large know the good that comes from conservation practices. Yet many who have sloping land haven't made the shift to contour farming. They wonder about the costs involved.
There's an important surplus in Iowa today-people. Our natural population increase (births) has always been greater than our natural decrease (deaths). Since the turn of the century there's been a net movement of surplus people out of Iowa into other areas.
Results from cattle feeding experiments carried on during the past year were not very startling; yet the information gained may be useful to many farmers. From these results we can get a better idea of what does and what does not contribute to greater efficiency in feeding cattle.
We've seen a lot of new things in farming lately. And onrented farms any changes in method usually affect the terms of the farm lease. New methods call for new arrangements between landlord and tenant. They must decide what each will furnish- and how they will share in farm income and farm expenses. Over half of Iowa's farm land is operated by tenants- and for every tenant there's a landlord too.
