Statistics now available on early fall business conditions confirm the fact that the current business downturn has leveled out. Most of the business forecasters are predicting steady to slightly better business in 1955. They base their predictions on an approaching end to the inventory liquidation and still more housing construction. Both of these should fully offset the expected drop in defense spending and the somewhat lower level of business investment in new factories and factory equipment. This would mean about the same level of buying power as in 1954 for American consumers.
