Learning storm dynamics with a virtual thunderstorm

Abstract

A virtual tornadic thunder-storm activity promises to help students learn storm dynamics. The activity includes improved visual effects, sound, and a graphical user interface (GUI) that allows students to collect weather data for analysis throughout the three-dimensional volume. Initial evaluation using surveys and quizzes distributed to nearly 400 students enrolled in an introductory meteorology course revealed that better understanding of the activity is better after exposure to traditional lecturing.
