Description

In Ames, Iowa, the growing student population has placed new demands on the city’s housing, and urban planners are challenged to meet the needs of the current student population while also planning for the continued demand for student housing in the future. In order to determine appropriate locations for further student housing development, a site suitability analysis based on five spatial criteria was conducted using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial statistics. Specifically spatial criteria included clusters of student population, zoning, public transportation, bikeways, and flood hazard. Three scenarios of development were explored, including an equal weight scenario, a transportation scenario, and environmental protection scenario. Finally, a ranking of site priority areas and recommendations for future development were delivered. It is expected that the selected sites can serve as input for urban planners when working to expand the housing stock in Ames.
