Description

Sukup Hall, Elings Hall, and the Advanced Teaching and Research Building (ATRB) are brand new buildings on Iowa State University's campus, each with a unique structural design that fits a particular function. Sukup Hall and Elings Hall serve the Agricultural and Biosystems (ABE) Department and the ATRB will serve the Biosciences Department. This project uncovers how each building's function influenced structural design decisions made by the structural engineers for these facilities. Interviewing the owners and structural engineers for these buildings provided insight into multiple criteria that must be considered when constructing a building. These include the loads each building will experience, the purpose of different spaces, building materials, architectural requirements, and cost considerations. Using this information, one who is unfamiliar with the structural design of a building can learn how to achieve the most efficient structural design for a building base on its function.
