Description

Math and Statistics careers are continuing to grow in the US alongside other STEM paths. With the comfortable income, stability, and engaging problems that these careers provide, they are expected to draw employees from all demographics. Despite female students flooding into these career paths, many “leak out” during college and early in their careers leaving only a trickle to reach elite positions within STEM. Studies have proven that mentoring can be used to increase retention, but not many girls have Engineers and Mathematicians to learn from before reaching college. Focusing on Statistics careers, Stem and Statistics: Entry and Statistics in the Statistics Stream is a booklet of advice for students interested in analytics before they find mentors later in life. After researching factors that influence job satisfaction and quitting, two women currently in the Statistics field were interviewed to share how the factors have impacted them. The booklet summarizes these women’s career paths, their processes for overcoming challenges, and the role mentoring has had in their lives. Young students reading this booklet will gain a tool for entering college in Statistics related studies.
