Sudden death in young horses, three to six years of age, is frequently observed. The owners usually state the horses were in good condition and had not been observed to be ill. While being worked or exercised the horses suddenly die or show respiratory distress and die after a very brief illness.
Modern medicine has created more and greater demands on the basic sciences of the profession of veterinary medicine. Because of careful planning by such men as Dr. Robert Getty, Head and Professor of Veterinary Anatomy at Iowa State University, anatomy has evolved from the detailed study of osteology and muscle attachment to the more practical aspect of fundamental anatomy. The year 1961 marks the tenth year Dr. Getty has directed the department of anatomy.
