Paratuberculosis is a chronic and contagious infection of ruminants in which the most common finding is an enteritis. Its infectious nature was suspected at the beginning of this century and has since been confirmed (10). It is caused by an acid-alcohol-fast bacillus commonly called Johne's bacillus (Mycobacterium johnei).
