Hypercalcemic Nephropathy in the Dog
( 1985) Hikes, Ellen ; Morrison, Wallace ; Iowa State University Digital Repository

Calcium is a functionally important ion and coenzyme in most all of the body systems. Besides its structural role in bone, calcium is involved in muscle contraction, the blood coagulation system, enzyme activity, nerve impulse transmission, hormone release and membrane permeability.I-3 Calcium metabolism is regulated primarily by parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin (CT), and vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol). The release of these hormones is controlled by the concentration of calcium in the plasma. Exact regulation of calcium in extracellular fluid is necessary to maintain normal body function.

Jones's Animal Nursing, 4th Edition, D.R. Lane, Editor. Pergamon Press, Elmsford, New York, 1985, paperback $38.00, hardcover $69.00, 706 pages.

Jones's Animal Nursing is advertised as a text which "covers the whole area of small animal nursing;' The text is strictly directed toward technicians who are working with companion animals (including birds and laboratory rodents); there are no sections dealing with large animal nursing; The book covers a wide gamut of topics in small animal nursing, unfortunately, many significant subject areas are dealt with in such brevity as to render those sections useless.

Theory and Application of the Chapman Heartbar Horseshoe for Laminitis
( 1985) Skog, William ; Reinertson, Eric ; Iowa State University Digital Repository

In the past fifteen years great advances have been made in understanding the pathogenesis and treatment of laminitis. One of these advances is the use of the heartbar shoe. In theory the Chapman heart bar should work well for the treatment of laminitis, however, in practice favorable results depend on the proper application of the shoe along with supportive care of the foot.
