A great deal of research aimed at the development of quantitative ultrasonic flaw characterization methods has been pursued under Department of Defense sponsorship over the past several years.1Since some of these methods are being considered for eventual application, we have undertaken an assessment of one aspect of these methods, concentrating our efforts in an area which has not been subject to much study.
