Description

The obvious advantage of composite materials is in their high strength and stiffness to weight ratios. The anisotropy of the material allows strength to be utilized in a given design direction without the addition of extra weight resulting from strength in unnecessary directions, as is usually the case in isotropic materials. The use of these materials can yield dramatic weight savings over their more conventional metallic counterparts which can reduce fuel consumption and allow for carrying additional fuel or cargo.
