Description

It has been noted in the literature that for certain materials the presence and propagation of a microcrack is often accompanied by the nucleation and coalescence of microvoids or microcracks in a process zone surrounding the tips of the macrocrack. During these processes, stored energy is intermittently released and transient elastic waves are emitted. These wave emissions can be measured experimentally to detect this process.
