When an ultrasonic testing is used to detect a defect near a free surface, observed waveforms include not only scattered waves from a defect but also reflected waves from a free surface. For quantitative evaluation of a defect near a free surface, therefore, it is necessary to investigate reflection and scattering phenomena around a defect in a half space.
