The field of professional communication should investigate corporate policy documents for several reasons. First, we do not know how policy documents are used in the workplace. Second, we do not have an understanding of the generic conventions (or the reasons for these conventions) of policy documents. Third, since we do not understand how policy documents are used nor do we know the conventions of these documents, we can't begin to understand how corporate policy documents can be improved, perhaps through usability testing.
