Abstract
The goal of this thesis was to create a new space for artistic expression and to bring forth traditional Ethiopian Orthodox imagery to the Western mode of textile art. By choosing to work mainly with fibers/fabrics and through utilizing the spinning, stitching, knotting, braiding, dyeing, painting and molding techniques, I was able to create four art-to-wear pieces which became the perfect canvas for portraying Ethiopian culture. The capes are a result of five months research conducted in Ethiopia where travels were made to monasteries and churches built between the 11th and the 16th centuries to document visual inspirations. The research also covers written sources from the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, observations of Christian-Orthodox art in the Addis Ababa University Museum as well as an interview with an art historian.
