Abstract

Quasicrystals, because of their aperiodic nature, do not contain lattice planes. However, for decagonal quasicrystals, it has been suggested that one can link the aperiodic and periodic axes using what have been termed net planes. It is further suggested that these net planes may play a critical role in the stability and growth of decagonal quasicrystals. Here, the possible morphological role of net planes and their structural stability was examined. A single grain surface of decagonal Al-Ni-Co was studied using low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The results indicate that stable net planes linking the aperiodic and periodic axes do exist.
