Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator, was born in Recife a northeastern city in Brazil which has been characterized as one of most impoverished and underdeveloped areas of not only Brazil, but the world. Throughout his early life he entered in contact with all the problems of the people in the region. His desire to help and his love for the study of the Portuguese language led him to abandon in the beginning a career as a lawyer, and to dedicate his work and effort in developing a system of adult literacy which also included the political participation of the learner making him/her aware of his/her oppression;Throughout the years as the educational system became better known and the political situation of Brazil began to change, Freire had the opportunity to make his system a "national project." A coup d'etat terminated all efforts and sent Freire to prison and later into exile. Travelling around the world during his fifteen years of exile, made him famous and one of the most important contributors to education. His philosophy of radical education, the concept of "conscientization," his contribution to education, and other disciplines have earned him a place in the world of educational ideas.
