The SafePork conference series began in 1996 to bring together international researchers, industry, and government agencies to discuss current Salmonella research and identify research needs pertaining to both pig and pork production. In subsequent years topics of research presented at these conferences expanded to include other chemical and biological hazards to pig and pork production.

Abstract

The Danish Salmonella Control Program (I) was started in 1995 with the main objective to reduce the occurrence of Salmonella enterica in swineherds and pork. The total cost of the program is about 14.3 mill $US annually. About 2,6 mill $US is paid by the state and the farmers or their organization pay the remaining costs (11.7 $US). Therefore, both to ensure the objective is met and for economical reason, it is important to evaluate if the prevalence of Salmonella decreases.
